Before Android manufacturers like Samsung and Google started promising seven years of updates, Apple was already leading the way in long-term software support. While Apple never committed to a specific number of iOS updates, iPhones typically received at least five major updates.
However, as iOS evolves and introduces more demanding features, older iPhones are gradually left behind. According to a trusted source on X (formerly Twitter), iOS 19 may no longer support three iPhones from 2018: the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. All three devices currently run iOS 18.
If the leak is accurate, these three iPhones will not receive iOS 19:
These models, despite their modern design at the time, were released in 2018 and may not meet the requirements for the upcoming update.
According to the leak, iOS 19 will be supported on the following iPhones:
Interestingly, Apple may also drop support for the 7th-gen iPad (2019) from iPadOS 19. That device uses the older A10 Fusion chip — the same one found in the iPhone 7 series, which stopped getting updates after iOS 15.
Even if your iPhone supports iOS 19, you may not get access to new Apple Intelligence features unless your device has at least 8GB of RAM — such as the iPhone 15 Pro and newer. Apple is expected to continue expanding these features gradually.
Apple will officially unveil iOS 19 at WWDC 2025 in June. A developer beta will follow shortly after, while the stable public release is expected in September alongside the launch of the iPhone 17.
Even for iPhones stuck on iOS 18, Apple will continue to provide security updates to keep devices safe.
